Days Between Dates Calculator
Pick two dates to see the exact number of days between them, plus the same gap in weeks, in months and in a years, months and days breakdown. You can choose whether the end date counts.
How the gap is counted
Each date is converted to a UTC midnight, and the gap is the difference divided by the length of a day, so daylight saving shifts cannot create a false extra hour. The count is elapsed days: from Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. Choosing to include the end date adds one, which is how you count when both the first and last days are part of the span, such as a hotel stay of nights plus checkout day or a 7-day course running Monday to Sunday.
Years, months and days
Calendar months are uneven, so the breakdown is built in a fixed order. The calculator finds the largest whole number of months that can be added to the start date without passing the end date, then counts the leftover days. For 31 January 2024 to 1 March 2024 that gives 1 month and 1 day, because 31 January plus one month lands on 29 February.
Other tools may split the same span differently, for example borrowing days from the month before the end date. Both are reasonable, so use the total days figure when you need something unambiguous, such as a contract period.
Common counting mistakes
- Fencepost errors: 1 to 10 January is 9 elapsed days but 10 days if both dates count.
- Time of day: this tool compares dates only. Two timestamps 30 hours apart can be 1 or 2 calendar days apart depending on the clock times.
- Different calendars: the Gregorian calendar is used throughout.
- Business days: weekends and holidays are included here. Use the business days calculator for working days.

To find a new date rather than a gap, use the date calculator. To count the days of a person's life, the age calculator gives years, months and days from a birth date. Decimal weeks and years here are for quick comparisons only: a decimal year uses 365.25 days to average out leap years.
When you need the answer for a contract, a visa, a warranty or a notice period, check how that document counts days. Some count the first day, some count only the days after it, and some exclude weekends or holidays. This page gives the plain calendar difference, so adjust by one day if your rule differs, or use the business days calculator when only working days matter. Leap days are included automatically whenever 29 February falls inside the range.

Frequently asked questions
How many days are between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one. The calculator does this on UTC midnights, so the answer is a whole number of days that ignores clock changes.
Should I include the end date?
Include it when both the first and last day belong to the period, such as days of leave taken. Leave it off when you only want the number of days that have elapsed.
Why might my result differ from another tool by one day?
The usual reason is whether the end date is counted. Another cause is comparing timestamps instead of calendar dates, which can differ by the time of day.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. Because it counts actual calendar days, 29 February is included whenever it falls inside the span.
What if the end date is earlier than the start date?
The dates are swapped and a note tells you. The gap is always shown as a positive number.
