Lease Calculator: Monthly Payment, Money Factor and Total Cost

Work out a vehicle lease payment from the negotiated price, residual value, term and money factor. The tool also converts the money factor to an approximate APR and shows what you pay in total.

The residual value is a percentage of this figure.
Reduces the capitalized cost. Large down payments on a lease carry risk if the car is lost or written off.
Set by the lessor; ask for it in writing.
Rules differ by location; enter the rate that applies to you.

How a lease payment is built

A lease charges you for the part of the car you use up, plus a finance charge. There are two components.

The monthly payment is the sum, plus any tax charged on it. Capitalized cost is the negotiated price minus any down payment or trade-in credit.

Money factor and APR

The money factor is a small decimal such as 0.0025. Multiplying by 2,400 gives an approximate APR, so 0.0025 corresponds to about 6%. The factor of 2,400 comes from converting a monthly rate (divide by 12 and by 100) and from the averaging in the rent-charge formula, which doubles the balance. If your lessor quotes only an APR, select that option and the calculator divides by 2,400 to find the money factor. Use the result to compare the lease with a loan from the auto loan calculator, bearing in mind that the two are not identical products.

What to check before signing

  1. The residual value and money factor, since both are usually set by the lessor and both can be questioned.
  2. The negotiated price. Lowering it reduces both parts of the payment.
  3. Mileage limits and charges per extra mile.
  4. Fees due at signing, and whether they are rolled into the capitalized cost.
  5. Wear-and-tear terms and early-termination costs.

A low monthly payment can hide a large amount due at signing, so compare the total paid and the all-in monthly average, not just the payment.

Limits

Taxes on leases are charged in different ways: on the payment, on the total, or on the price. This tool applies the rate you enter to the monthly payment only. It does not model refundable deposits, mileage charges, insurance requirements or the option to buy at the end. Estimates are for comparison, and the lease contract controls.

One more habit helps: compute the lease twice, once at the first quote and once after negotiating the price down, and compare the two payments. Because the price enters both the depreciation and the rent charge, a reduction of a few hundred in the capitalized cost lowers the payment by more than the reduction divided by the term. Likewise, try a shorter and a longer term; residual percentages often differ by term, so enter the one quoted for each length rather than reusing a single figure.

Worked example

A 38,000 car negotiated to 36,000, with 2,000 down, a 58% residual over 39 months, a money factor of 0.0021, 6% tax on the payment and 800 in fees.

Frequently asked questions

How is a car lease payment calculated?

Add the monthly depreciation, which is the capitalized cost minus the residual divided by the term, to the rent charge, which is the sum of the capitalized cost and residual multiplied by the money factor.

What is a money factor?

It is the lease finance rate written as a small decimal. Multiply it by 2,400 to estimate the equivalent APR.

What is residual value?

It is the lessor's estimate of what the car will be worth at the end of the lease, often stated as a percentage of the sticker price.

Does a down payment lower the payment?

Yes, it reduces the capitalized cost. But you may lose it if the car is written off early, so many people prefer to pay less up front.

Is leasing cheaper than buying?

Monthly payments are usually lower, but you do not own the car at the end. Compare the total cost over the period you plan to keep a vehicle.
