Final Grade Calculator: What Score Do You Need?

Enter your grade before the final, how much the final counts, and the course grade you want. The calculator solves for the exam score you need and tells you if the target is already secured or out of reach.

The grade on everything except the final exam.
The share of the course grade that the final is worth.

The formula behind the answer

The course grade is a blend of two parts: the work already graded and the final exam. If the final carries a weight w (as a fraction, so 30% is 0.30), the rest of the course carries 1 − w.

Course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w

Solving for the final score gives:

Final needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

With a current grade of 82, a weight of 30% and a target of 85, the working is (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 92. The student needs 92% on the exam.

Reading the three possible outcomes

The extra rows show where you land with a score of zero and with full marks. Together they give the whole span of outcomes from the final.

Getting the inputs right

The current grade must be the grade on everything except the final, not your running total out of 100. If your portal reports a total that already includes a zero for the unmarked final, divide the banked points by the share of the course that has been graded. The weighted grade calculator does that step for you.

Check how your teacher treats the final. Some courses replace the lowest test with the final score, or set a minimum mark that must be passed separately. Those rules sit outside a simple weighted formula. Round the answer up in your own planning, because needing 91.2% in practice means aiming for 92% or more.

Limits and good planning

The calculation assumes a fixed weight, no curve and no rounding by the instructor. Courses that round 89.5 up to 90 can be easier than the exact figure suggests; courses with a pass threshold on the exam can be harder. Use the result to set a study goal, not as a promise, and confirm borderline cases with your instructor.

It also helps to compare several targets before choosing one. The table lists the exam score needed for each common grade boundary, so you can see how steeply the requirement rises. Going from a B to an A can demand a far bigger jump on the final than going from a C to a B, especially when the exam weight is small.

Worked example

A student holds 82% on all work before the final, the final is worth 30% of the course, and the goal is an 85% course grade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Subtract your current grade multiplied by the share not covered by the final from your target, then divide by the final exam weight as a fraction. The calculator does this and shows the working in the text above.

What does already secured mean?

It means the grade you have banked is high enough that even a zero on the final would leave you at or above your target. Check your syllabus for any rule that requires passing the exam separately.

What if the score needed is over 100 percent?

Then the target cannot be reached with normal marks. Pick a lower target from the table, or ask whether extra credit or a replacement-grade policy exists in your course.

What should I use as my current grade?

Use the weighted grade on all the coursework graded before the final, as a percentage out of 100. Do not include a placeholder zero for the final exam itself.

Does this work for a midterm or any single assessment?

Yes. Enter the weight of the one remaining assessment and the grade on everything else, and the same formula gives the score needed on that last piece.
