Weighted Grade Calculator

Enter each score, what it was out of, and how much it counts toward the course. You get your grade so far, the points already banked, and the lowest and highest final grades still possible once the remaining work is done.

Leave the score blank for work not yet graded; its weight counts as remaining.

How a weighted grade works

In a weighted course, not every mark counts equally. Each category has a weight, usually a percentage of the final grade, and the weights are meant to add up to 100. A score is first turned into a percentage of its maximum, then multiplied by its weight.

Points banked = Σ (score ÷ maximum × weight)

Current grade = points banked ÷ weight graded so far × 100

Dividing by the graded weight rather than by 100 matters. If only 75% of the course has been marked, your points are out of 75, not out of 100, so a raw total of 61.1 means a current grade of about 81.5%, not 61.1%.

The range still possible

Work that has not been graded cannot be predicted, but it can be bounded. If everything remaining scored zero, the final grade would equal the points already banked. If everything remaining were marked perfectly, the final grade would be the banked points plus the whole remaining weight. The two figures show how much room is left, and they narrow as the term goes on.

When the range is wide, the next few assessments can change the outcome a great deal. When it is narrow, the result is nearly settled. To find the exact mark needed on one remaining exam for a target grade, switch to the final grade calculator.

Limits to keep in mind

This is an estimate based on the numbers you type. Teachers may round at the end, curve a class, apply late penalties or replace a low exam with a higher one. A letter shown here follows a common 90, 80, 70, 60 pattern, which many schools do not use. Treat the figure as a planning aid and confirm your standing in your school's gradebook.

One habit helps a lot: update the sheet after every returned assignment. A grade that is tracked weekly rarely holds surprises at the end of term, and an early look at the lowest-possible and highest-possible figures shows whether effort is better spent on the next big assessment or on small recurring tasks.

Worked example

Homework 85/100 (20%), quizzes 18/20 (10%), midterm 72/100 (30%) and a project 90/100 (15%) are graded. The final exam, worth 25%, has not happened yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Convert each score to a percentage of its maximum, multiply by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight graded so far. The page shows the points banked for every item.

What if my weights do not add up to 100?

The tool still works. It uses the weights you gave as relative sizes, shows a note with the total, and scales the possible final range to that total.

What should I enter for work that is not graded yet?

Leave the score blank but enter the weight. That weight is counted as remaining, which produces the lowest and highest final grades that are still possible.

Can I enter extra credit?

Yes. A score above the maximum is accepted, so 21 out of 20 contributes more than full marks would. Check that your teacher counts extra credit in the way you are modelling.

Why is my grade here different from my school portal?

Portals may use different category rules, drop low scores, round at different steps or hold back ungraded work. Compare the weights and the dropped items first.
